Joint CAS

CAS stands for C onfirmation of A cceptance for S tudies.

You need a CAS number to apply for a Student visa.

The CAS number is a unique alphanumeric code that links to a virtual document on the UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) online Sponsorship Management System.

The CAS statement is information about you and your intended programme of study contained in the virtual document shared with UKVI.

Each CAS is institution and programme specific.Ìý That means that a CAS issued by the ÃÛÌÒTV can only be used in a Student visa application for study at Southampton on the programme of study for which the CAS was issued.

Students are issued their CAS number in an email CAS statement. The CAS statement includes:

  • the full details of the student (name, date of birth, passport number, nationality)
  • the academic level of any previous UK study undertaken on Tier 4/Student visa
  • details about the programme of study (name of course, start/end date, tuition fees payable, ATAS requirement)
  • the academic qualifications used to obtain offer and how the student has met the English language requirement

It is really important for students to check their CAS statement very carefully and inform the University by emailing casteam@soton.ac.uk if any of the details on the statement are incorrect and/or they make a payment towards tuition fees.

A joint CAS or 'single' CAS is a CAS that is issued to cover a student's Pre-sessional and substantive (main) course of study.Ìý The University is able to issue a joint under the following conditions:

  • All academic offer conditions have been met
  • The Pre-sessional course is shorter than 12 weeks in duration and is at CEFR B2 level

If a student is taking a Pre-sessional course to meet the English language admissions requirement for entry onto their substantive (main) programme of study, theyÌýmust have a UKVI approved SELT to evidence their English language proficiency.

If a student has been unconditionally accepted ie met all offer requirements for their substantive (main) course of study including the University's English language admissions requirement and has chosen to take a Pre-sessional programme of study, a UKVI SELT is not required.
