Sanctuary Scholarship

The Sanctuary Scholarships are now open. The Undergraduate deadline is Sunday 25th May 2025 (to keep within the time frame for ). The Postgraduate deadlineÌýis Friday 6th June 2025.

The Sanctuary Scholarships are available for new Undergraduate (UG) and new Postgraduate Taught (PGT) students, starting September 2025. Our Sanctuary Scholarship supports 4 students per year who are seeking sanctuary in the UK, 1 Undergraduate and 3 Postgraduate.

  • Priority will be given to those in neighbouring counties; Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Sussex, and West Surrey
  • You must not be eligible for Government funding (Student Finance) by virtue of your immigration status, as detailed above. If you hold a student visa, you are not eligible for this scholarship.

  • under 18 years old having lived in the UK for at least 7 years before the first day of the first academic year of your course; or

Residence requirement for Humanitarian Protection in the UK: There is no three-year residence test for this category. Applicants must have been ordinarily resident in the throughout the period since being granted their humanitarian protection/LLR.

If you have ILR, you could access SFE if you have been in the UK for 3 years before (and on) the first day of the first year of the course. If not, then you will not be able to get SFE. Ìý

2025-26 Sanctuary Scholarship Application

What is the shortlisting process?

Stage 1 - Submit scholarship application along with required evidence

  • Admissions letter
  • Application form
  • Immigration evidence
  • Reference

Stage 2 - The Sanctuary Coordinator will process the forms and may contact applicants should further information be required.

Stage 3 - The Undergraduate applications close on Sunday 25th May.ÌýThe Postgraduate applications close on Friday 6th June 2025.

Stage 4 - The panel meet to go through completed applications.

Stage 5 - The panel select the applicants they wish to offer the scholarship to.

Stage 6 - The Sanctuary Coordinator contacts the successful applicants to offer them a conditional scholarship offer. This condition is based on being able to successfully enrol onto one of our university programmes and completing a Right to ÃÛÌÒTV Check.

Stage 7 - Applicants accept or decline the scholarship offer. If declined, the panel go back to the unsuccessful applicants to enquire if they are still interested and hold and eligible.

Stage 8 -ÌýIn August 2025 students must confirm they have/have not met the requirements of their programme following results day.

Stage 9 - Applicants confirm with the Sanctuary Coordinator and apply for the accommodation if needed. Students then need to complete their Right to ÃÛÌÒTV checks.

Stage 10 - The university conducts a check on 1st September 2025 to ensure eligibility and will then confirm that students can move into their accommodation/move to Southampton.

Scholars are not to move to Southampton until they have confirmation from the Sanctuary Coordinator after 1st September 2025.
