The Southampton Clinical and Experimental Neurology Team (SCENT) is a teamÌýof scientists andÌýclinicians from across the UniversityÌýof Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust doing leading edge research in inflammatory and haemorrhagic brain conditions.
Several clinical and lab-based research projects aim toÌýexpandÌýour understanding of the interplay between blood and brain in neurological disease. Focus research areas include the blood-brain barrier, neurotoxicity of blood-derived products and the effects of systemic inflammation on the brain. A key aim of SCENT is theÌýrapid translation of concepts from discovery science to clinical practice. In parallel, we train the next generation of translational researchers.
Key neurological areas are multiple sclerosis, subarachnoid haemorrhage and head injury. SCENT works closely with regional multiple sclerosis and neurosurgical teams covering a catchment area ofÌýfour million in the South of England, incorporating Hampshire, Isle of Wight and surrounding regions. Clinical care is coordinated from the Wessex Neurological Centre located in Southampton, together with aÌýnetwork of community-based specialist nurses and district hospital-based consultants.
