Title:ÌýTidal effects in gravitational waves from neutron star binary inspirals in scalar-tensor gravity
Abstract:ÌýNeutron stars involve subatomic matter compressed by nonlinear, strong-field gravity to supra-nuclear densities and are unique laboratories, for example, Ìýfor subatomic physics and couplings between gravity and matter. To gain deeper insights into the fundamental information contained in observable neutron star properties and potential degeneracies between different sectors of physics contributing to measurable parameters, it is useful to consider theories of gravity beyond General Relativity. A feature of many such theories is the presence of an extra scalar field. This talk will focus on features of neutron stars in a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity, which alters the properties of neutron stars in parts of the parameter space and has consequences for the signatures of tidal effects in gravitational waves from binary inspirals. I will discuss examples of a larger set of tidal interactions that arise in these scenarios, their associated characteristic parameters and expected imprints in gravitational waves, and comment on more general insights for tracing the information flow from neutron star interiors to asymptotic gravitational waves.
