Project overview
This project is a study of law and practice of electronic bill of lading. It aims to modernise the law on electronic bill of lading and implement the law on practice of electronic bill of lading.
This project includes the study of electronic bill of lading in the context of English law, e.g., the Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023, the empirical study of practice of solution providers of electronic bill of lading, and the comparative study with Chinese law for the reform of Chinese Maritime Code.
This project has been funded internally and externally as follows.
1. The project was funded by Southampton Law School Strategic Research Fund 2023 for a workshop on electronic bill of lading on 18 May 2023. The speakers include Boaz Lessem (WaveBL), Marina Comninos (essDOCS), Richard Lord KC (Brick Court Chambers and IML Fellow), Omer Guy (DCSA) Luca Castellani (UNCITRAL: United Nations Commission on International Trade Law), Michael Biltoo (Kennedys) and Liang Zhao (IML).
2. The project was also funded by the Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) for a field study in London (the International Group of P&I Clubs ) and Athens (ICE CargoDocs system) in 2024. The field study is for implementing the Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023.
3. The project was further funded by Society of Legal Scholars Research Activities Fund 2024. The fund was used for a case study in Singapore. I visited Bolero and TradeGo, and had a talk in the Centre for Maritime Law at the National Universityof Singapore Faculty of Law.
4. The project was funded by University Impact Fund for "Electronic bills of lading legislation:experience from English law for Chinese Maritime Law reform" in 2023.
