Dr Athina Thoma is a Lecturer in Mathematics Education within Southampton Education School at the ÃÛÌÒTV.
Athina’s research is focused on Mathematics education at University level. Her current research interests include the impact of programming on mathematics undergraduate students’ learning, and students’ transition between Secondary and University-level Mathematics.
Athina’s recent research is focused on students' transition between secondary and university mathematics. She is also studying mathematics undergraduate students' engagement with an interactive theorem prover.
Athina’s research methods are mostly qualitative, using discourse analysis and thematic analysis.

Before joining the Southampton Education School, Athina worked as a researcher at Imperial College of London (Teaching proof to undergraduate students with Lean. Pedagogy Transformation - Imperial College Learning and Teaching strategy) and University of East Anglia (MathTASK and CAPTeaM). She also worked as a Learning Enhancement Tutor of Mathematics and Statistics and an Associate Tutor in undergraduate and postgraduate modules at the University of East Anglia.
