On Monday 17th March 2025, a group of two academics (Associate Professor Dr Hedvig Schmidt and Dr Napoleon Xanthoulis) and 29 students from the LLB, LLM and PGR programmes of Southampton Law School with a passion for data protection and intellectual property law visited IBM in Hursley.

The group was hosted by Professor and Master Inventor John McNamara of IBM, who spoke at length with the students about Artificial Intelligence, innovation and IBM’s take on the importance of transparency and ethics policies around developing AI for the greater good of society. Prof McNamara also treated the students to a visit in the IBM museum which displays the very first IBM computers and typewriters.

This was the second visit of Southampton’s academic community to IBM and complemented the Law and Technology Centre’s Annual Talk, delivered by Prof McNamara on 26th February 2025.
