Worried about a student?

There may be times when you are concerned about another student who appears to be struggling in some way, whether that's a housemate whose behaviour is worrying you, someone on your course who seems upset, or a fellow student who is having difficulties.Ìý

There may also be times where you may feel the need to access some more immediate support for another student or yourself.Ìý

Raising a wellbeing concern about a student

If you are concerned about a student, you can raise a concern by emailing studenthub@soton.ac.uk or telephoning 02380 599 599. If you are internal to the University, you can also access the for further information.

Raising a safeguarding concern

If you have a safeguarding concern, please contactÌýThe ÃÛÌÒTV Principal Safeguarding Officer, contactable on: +44 23 8059 8017 (Monday-Friday, 9:00-17:00) or out of hours on 02380 599 599.ÌýÌý

If your safeguarding concern is sensitive, you may wish to email studenthub@soton.ac.uk. Please state in your email ‘For the attention of the Principal safeguarding Officer'.

In urgent situations

In urgent situations, please encourage the student to contact one of the listed support services below, or contact them yourself if you feel that it is appropriate and you are comfortable doing so.Ìý

If you feel at immediate risk of harm to yourself, go straight to your nearest Accident and Emergency department or call the Emergency Services on 999.Ìý

If you are feeling very distressed or having thoughts of self-harm or suicide and need immediate help please contact your doctor's surgery and request an emergency appointment.Ìý

Please note that your GP surgery is likely to be restricted to working hours.Ìý

You should use the NHS 111 service if your GP surgery is closed and you need medical help or advice but it is not a life-threatening situation.Ìý

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.Ìý

To speak to someone in confidence, the Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Samaritans are free to call from mobiles and landlines.Ìý

Outside of office hours (18:00 to 08:00, all weekends, Bank Holidays and University closure days) Student Services, in conjunction with University Security, provide an Out of Hours service for very urgent situations. The security guards are first aid trained.Ìý

In non-urgent situations

In non-urgent situations, you may wish to direct the student to the Student Wellbeing Team to discuss appropriate support and advice for their situation.ÌýÌý
